A formação original da banda incluía Mike Reno (vocal), Paul Dean (guitarra), Scott Smith (baixo), Doug Johnson (teclados) e Matt Frenette (bateria). Juntos, eles lançaram seu álbum de estreia autointitulado em 1980, que incluía sucessos como "Turn Me Loose" e "The Kid is Hot Tonight". O álbum foi um sucesso instantâneo, colocando a Loverboy no mapa do rock internacional.
Em 1981, eles lançaram seu segundo álbum, "Get Lucky", que apresentava um de seus maiores sucessos, "Working for the Weekend". A canção se tornou um hino para os trabalhadores e uma das mais conhecidas da banda.
