A banda faz músicas e álbuns continuamente, desde 1986, com o mesmo estilo com o qual eles começaram: músicas de metal rápidas, honrando o álcool. Assim eles afirmam ter inventado um novo gênero chamado “alcoholic metal”. Se consideram “Kings Of Beer” em homenagem ao personagem folclórico Gambrinus.
Tankard foi formada em 1982 por três colegas de classe: Andreas Geremia, Axel Katzmann e Frank Thorwarth. Na época, a banda ainda era conhecida como Vortex e/ou Avenger, até o nome Tankard ser descoberto pela banda através de um dicionário. A primeira música da banda foi "Ray Death", que tratava sobre guerra nuclear. O primeiro concerto da banda foi realizado em sala de aula em 1983. Pelo fato dos integrantes da banda não poderem beber álcool dentro da Instituição, eles esvaziavam caixinhas de leite e trocavam por cerveja. Ainda em seu início, Bernhard Rapprich, então membro da banda, deixa o grupo, pois seu pai, conservador, não o permitia "sair com um bando de bêbados". Bernhard foi substituído por Andy Bulgaropoulos.
A banda começou tocando covers de bandas como Metallica, Slayer, e de seus conterrâneos do Kreator e Destruction. Em 1984, o Tankard assinou com o selo Noise Records. Durante todos esses anos o Tankard vem construindo uma base de fãs bastante sólida e tem lançado uma série de álbuns reforçando a imagem de "Reis da Cerveja". Apesar de trabalharem em outros ramos para seu sustento, a banda consegue se manter "na mira do público e da mídia especializada", realizando turnês e aparecendo com frequência nos mais populares festivais de verão da Europa.
